After the year that stopped the world — 2020 – a defining moment where the transportation industry was forced to rethink and adapt quickly to the new era, 2021 and 2022 had its key turning points in mobility.
A $1.2 trillion once-in-a-generation investment in US infrastructure: that is the promise of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, signed into law by President Joe Biden at the end of 2021. The bill aims to improve US roads and bridges, increase investments in public transit, upgrade airports and ports, expand the network of electric vehicle chargers, and tackle the climate crisis.
It gets better. The Inflation Reduction Act, signed on August 16, 2022, is now helping direct more funds into domestic energy production while boosting clean energy. A total of $391 billion will be spent on energy and climate change, the largest investment to date to address the climate crisis in the US.
However, transit agencies are grappling with the fact that many who used to ride the train or the bus five days a week are now venturing to the office far less. So what do they do about all of that lost fare revenue? Some say they need to forget about fares altogether!
This has also been a turbulent year at Tesla. The company may still be the world’s most valuable automaker, but Tesla ends 2022 worth less than half of what it was at the beginning of the year. 2023 may prove to be a big test for Tesla. Industry observers worry not only that Musk is distracted by his new Twitter venture, but that his increasingly controversial behavior may turn off many prospective Tesla buyers.
The European Union has also faced its challenges with the war in Ukraine and the rising costs of gas and electricity as winter hits. However, cities across the continent are accelerating plans to build more liveable urban spaces. The EU also plans to phase out combustion cars by 2035.
The coming yearis looking more and more promising for public transportation users, micromobility entrepreneurs, EV makers and adopters, advanced air mobility visionaries, and clean energy supporters.
